This is the single most common question I get, and nobody likes the answer photographers usually give: it depends. Here is a straighter answer. In Los Angeles, a decent headshot session runs anywhere from under $300 to well over $1,500, and the price tells you exactly what kind of session you are buying. Below is a breakdown of the real pricing tiers, what each one buys you, and how to figure out which tier matches what you actually need. If you want the wider picture of portrait pricing beyond headshots, I have also written about how much portrait photography costs in general.
What a Headshot Price Actually Covers
Before the tiers, understand what you are paying for. It is never just a photo. Every headshot session price is built from the same ingredients, and the tier you buy decides how much of each you get.
Direction time
Direction time is the biggest variable. Some photographers stand behind the camera and say "smile" for ten minutes. Others direct every detail: chin position, eye line, shoulder angle, the difference between a friendly grin and a confident almost-smile. Direction is the thing most people underestimate, and it is the thing that separates a photo that looks like you on a good day from a photo that looks like a stronger version of you.
Lighting
Headshot lighting is a craft of its own. The right lighting sculpts the face, softens shadows where you want them soft, and adds a catchlight to the eyes that makes you look alive. Basic sessions use one light and a reflector. Premium sessions use multi-light setups, each light doing a specific job. The gear itself is affordable these days; knowing how to use it is not.
Retouching depth
Basic retouching removes blemishes and distractions. Mid-range retouching evens skin tone, softens under-eye shadows, and tidies flyaway hair. Deep retouching does all of that plus clothing cleanup, background polish, and subtle shaping, all while keeping you looking like yourself. Nobody wants to look plastic. Good retouching takes time, and time is what you are paying for.
Final files and licensing
Ask how many finished, retouched images you get and what you are allowed to do with them. Some packages give you one image for personal use. Others give you a full set with commercial rights for ads, book covers, and press materials. For actors, founders, and executives, licensing matters more than most people think.
Wardrobe and styling guidance
A session that includes wardrobe consultation before the shoot, with specific advice on colors, necklines, and patterns for your industry, produces better photos than one where you show up in whatever you grabbed. A "look" in professional terms means a full wardrobe and styling change, which takes real time in the schedule.
Under $300: The Basic Headshot
This tier is usually a mini session or an add-on. Expect 15 to 30 minutes, one outfit, one background, and one to three final digital images. Retouching covers the basics: blemish removal, minor cleanup, light skin smoothing. Direction is efficient rather than deep. Many of these sessions run at photography events or as studio filler bookings, where the photographer shoots a string of people back to back.
There is nothing wrong with this tier if your needs are simple. A clean LinkedIn photo, a team directory page, a company bio update. Just go in with eyes open. You will not get wardrobe changes, you will not get deep retouching, and you probably will not get a second chance if the first take does not work.
$300 to $600: The Mid-Range Session
For most professionals, this is the sweet spot. A typical mid-range session runs 60 to 90 minutes, includes one or two wardrobe changes, and delivers three to five finished images with real retouching. You get an actual consultation before the shoot, so the photographer understands your industry and what the photos need to say. Background options are wider. Turnaround is usually a week or two.
The difference you feel at this tier is pacing. You are not being rushed through a queue. The photographer has time to try expressions and adjust lighting for your face specifically. For job seekers, consultants, realtors, and anyone whose photo goes on marketing material, this tier is where the value per dollar is highest.
$600 and Up: The Premium Tier
This is where sessions become full productions. Multi-hour sessions, editorial-quality multi-light setups, deep retouching that keeps you looking human, wardrobe styling guidance before the shoot, a full proof gallery to choose from, and licensing that covers commercial use.
Who needs this? Actors whose headshots go to casting directors. Founders whose face is the brand. Speakers, authors, and executives whose photos appear in press and on stage backdrops. If your photo earns you money directly, the math is simple. A professional headshot that helps you land one client, one role, or one engagement pays for itself many times over.
It is definitely worth it, because everybody needs at least a couple of pictures for their own marketing. Dating profiles, speaking engagements, your marketing website, your social media profiles, so many different purposes.
Where My Headshot Sessions Sit
Full transparency, since that is the whole point of this article. My headshot sessions sit firmly in the premium tier, and here are the exact rates.
Two looks: $1,500. Three looks: $1,900. Four looks: $2,300. Five looks: $2,500.
A look is a full wardrobe and styling change, shot and directed by me. You are not buying shutter clicks. You are buying 27 years of photographing celebrities for magazines like GQ, Vogue, InStyle, People, Teen, Men's Health, and Departures, and shooting people like Lady Gaga, the Kardashians, and Richard Branson. The direction I give a CEO in a headshot session is the same direction I give a cover subject. That includes full retouching on your final images, an unhurried session where we take the time to get it right, and licensing that lets you actually use the photos in your career.
Questions to Ask Before You Book
Whatever tier you are shopping, ask these before you hand over a deposit. The answers tell you exactly which tier the photographer is really selling, regardless of the price on the website.
- How many final retouched images do I get?
- What exactly is included in the retouching?
- Do I get commercial usage rights, or personal use only?
- How long is the session, really?
- What happens if I do not like any of the photos?
- How long until I receive my final images?
- Are wardrobe consultation and outfit changes included?
A good photographer answers all of these without hedging. If the answers are vague, the tier is probably thinner than the price suggests.
The Bottom Line
Your headshot is the most-viewed image of you on the planet. It shows up on LinkedIn, company pages, press bios, conference speaker listings, and book jackets. Buy the tier that matches what that image earns you. If it just needs to look clean and professional, the basic or mid-range tier is plenty. If your photo is working to get you hired, cast, quoted, or booked, pay for the tier where the photographer treats your face like it matters.
